 Writing Skill

Writing is not a matter of simply encoding verbal thought in printed symbols and signs. It includes a number of several components.

Components of writing refers to the elements that make writing.

1. Mechanics

Mechanics refers to those aspects of writing such as spelling, use of punctuation marks, capitals, abbreviations and numbers which are often dealt with the revision or editing process. It is also known as graphical system. 

2. Cohesion

Cohesion refers to the grammatical and lexical relationship between different elements of a text.

3. Coherence

Coherence is the logical sequence or arrangement of ideas. It is concerned with the degree to which a piece of language makes sense.

4. Orthographic texts 

Orthography is concerned with writing and spelling system of a language . Language of the world use different writing such as syllabic writing and alphabetic writing.

Syllabic writing
It uses symbols to represent syllables. Eg. Japanese. 

Alphabetic writing 
It represents consonant and vowel segments.

5. Para-orthographic text

Para orthographic text refers to visual representations such as charts, tables, illustrations, diagrams and timelines. They can convey the same meaning more clearly and precisely than prose texts or paragraphs. Children should be trained to convert a prose text into para orthographic display and vice versa.

  3. Recombination
  4. Guided composition 
  5. Free writing.
